What is the Oremus prayer series?
Oremus, which is Latin for “let us pray,” is an eight-week faith
formation video series that seeks to help people learn how to pray
within the tradition of the Catholic Church.
Why do we need to be taught to pray?
Even the first disciples asked Jesus, “Lord, teach us to pray!” Luke
11:1. St. John Paul II told us we need to be educated in the “art of
prayer” and that our parishes must be “schools” of prayer.
Who is this series intended for?
The Oremus series is for everyone – teens and adults – regardless
of your prior prayer experience. You’ll be inspired to deepen your
prayer life while learning how to open yourself to God and receive
everything God wants for you in prayer.
I can’t attend every week. Can I still participate?
Yes!! Come to as many of the weekly lessons as possible. These
weeks are designed to help guide you step-by-step to draw close to
God and to listen for his voice speaking to you.
What can I expect at each lesson?
Fr. Mark Toups will present an informative and inspiring video
teaching on prayer, many of which are derived from the principles
contained in the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola, followed
by small group discussion.
What happens in the “small group” discussion?
A parish facilitator will guide your group’s discussion with preset
questions about the lesson. Everyone is welcome to talk, but there is
no mandatory sharing.
I’m not sure this prayer series is right for me?
Just give it a try. You have everything to gain! Ultimately, our
restless aching is a yearning for God. We need to connect with God. We
need prayer.
What forms of prayer will I be taught?
Oremus will provide you with the basics on both Christian
meditative and contemplative prayer, concentrating in a special way
on a form of praying with the Bible known as lectio divina, as well as
on imaginative prayer, a way of praying that allows the Holy Spirit to
guide your spiritual senses. The principles of this video series are
drawn from the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola.
Meditation and contemplation prayer practices? That
sounds pretty lofty!
God calls each of us, regardless of our state in life, to grow in
holiness. This type of prayer provides the means to a prayerful
conversation, and a deepened relationship with God. This is available
to each of us!
Attending the session is one thing, but how do I put what I
learn into practice?
In between sessions, you’ll be given Bible passages and guided
through a 20 – 30 minute time of daily personal prayer.
I’ve tried to spend time in prayer, but I get distracted;
other times I’m not sure if God is speaking to me. How will the Oremus series help me?
Lessons will be devoted to dealing with distractions, learning how
to discern what you “hear” in prayer, and in the times of desolation
and consolation. You will also be invited to keep track of your
thoughts and progress through short journal entries in your
workbook.
What is the cost to attend the Oremus prayer series?
A $10 donation is suggested for the workbook, A Guide to Catholic
Prayer.
Is this series only for Divine Child parishioners? Everyone
is welcome! In fact, we hope that you bring a friend (or two)
